Sóller Train
The Sóller Train is one of Mallorca’s top tourist attractions, offering a scenic ride between the charming town of Sóller and Palma as it winds its way through the dramatic landscapes of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains.
A Look Back
At the beginning of the 20th century, Sóller had become a bustling town with a flourishing industry that was only held back by the geographical isolation caused by its location among the mountains of the Serra de Tramuntana.
Transporting goods and passengers from Sóller was very difficult, as they had to travel by horse-drawn carriage along narrow, steep dirt roads that became treacherous and endless.
After carrying out different studies for the installation of the railway system that would link Sóller with Palma, in 1907, work began with the excavation of a tunnel almost 3,000 metres (9,842 feet) long in the depths of the Serra de Alfàbia mountain range.
The Sóller Train became an unstoppable masterpiece of engineering, capable of overcoming a difference in height of almost 200 metres (656 feet) over a stretch of 7 kilometres (4.34 miles), crossing bridges, tunnels, impossible curves and anything else that was put in front of it.
After the inauguration of the railway line, they decided to build the Sóller Tram. At first, it was designed to offer a passenger transport service, but in order to make the most of the journeys, some freight wagons were installed. These would be used to transport both military material and fresh fish from the port.
All Aboard!
The Sóller Train takes an hour-long journey of 27 km (16 miles) through the centre of Palma before getting lost in the unknown landscapes of inland Mallorca. Passing through olive groves and old estates, it winds its way through the rugged Serra de Tramuntana mountain range before winding its way down to the charming Port of Sóller.
Once in the port, it's possible to climb aboard the pleasant Sóller Tram for the last 5 km (3 mi) along the coast before plunging into the Plaza de la Constitución. There, you can enjoy the charm of Sóller before ending the tour at the old Art Deco-style station.
Prices & Timetable
The departure times of the Sóller Train vary depending on the time of year and date, while the tram runs very frequently, with departures every 30 minutes between 8 am and 9 pm.
The train ticket from Palma to Sóller costs € 23 (US$ 26.73) each way or € 30 (US$ 34.87) if you buy a return ticket. The price of the tram tickets is € 10 (US$ 11.62) each way, while if you buy the combined train and tram tickets, the total price would be € 40 (US$ 46.49).
A Must-See
The Sóller Train is much more than just a means of transport, it's one of Mallorca's main tourist attractions. On board the century-old Sóller Train, you'll feel a surprising sense of calm as you travel through the most unknown part of the island, which is why it has become so popular with tourists.
If you don't plan to take a ride on the Sóller tram, you can simply take some excellent photos of it (in Sóller or the Port of Sóller), as it's one of Mallorca's main tourist attractions and is a common sight on postcards of the island:
