Sóller

Surrounded by a majestic valley of orange trees in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, Sóller is one of the most beautiful towns in Mallorca. Its streets are full of modernist buildings that express the history and culture of a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Looking Back

In the past, Sóller became a prosperous town thanks to orange cultivation. However, this growth was seriously impeded by the isolation of the rest of the island due to the mountains.

This meant that a huge part of the population was forced to migrate to France in search of work. Yet, upon returning to the island with their small fortunes, they decided to build beautiful modernist houses.

In 1912, the train of Sóller was opened, with the aim of connecting Palma and Sóller with a marvellous work of engineering, crossing the mountains via tunnels. This has become one of the main tourist attractions in Mallorca.

What to See in Sóller

  • Plaza de la Constitución: the heart of Sóller is the Plaza de la Constitución Square, a pleasant spot presiding over the impressive Sant Bartomeu Church and surrounded by cafés and restaurants with terraces.
  • Sóller Tram: the lines of the mythical Sóller tram go through the centre of Plaza de la Constitución, offering a postcard view of the town as the train goes by.
  • Can Prunera: in an old modernist house, the Modernist Museum Can Prunera offers visitors the chance to explore the different levels of a perfectly conserved house, with original furniture to learn about what life was like in high society during the 20th century.
  • Sóller Train Station: in the old train station in Sóller, time seems to have stood still. With a charming old atmosphere, the station has two rooms dedicated to exhibitions by Joan Miró and Pablo Picasso.
  • Sóller Port: a visit to Sóller isn't complete without exploring the pretty port area. There's no better way of arriving here than aboard the Sóller tram.

Once you've explored Sóller, you can make the most of your time in the area by visiting the nearby town of Fornalutx, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain.
