Sant Elm
Sant Elm is an old fishing town located in western Mallorca, facing the island of Dragonera. One of its main charms is its calm, unchanged character, which it has preserved despite becoming a popular tourist destination.
Looking Back at Sant Elm
Once ravaged by bandits and pirates, Sant Elm was one of the main entry points during the various invasions the island endured.
Over the years, Sant Elm transformed into a peaceful and stable environment—a small fishing town that slowly evolved into a quiet, welcoming town with rich historical value. Today, it offers a variety of bars, restaurants, and small shops. While the town relies on tourism, its calm and authentic character still remains.
What to See in Sant Elm
Today, Sant Elm relies mainly on tourism, although fishing continues to be one of the town's main activities. This charming town of summer houses and residential areas is named after its patron saint of sailors. It still conserves its fishing port, which now also shares space with an area for nautical activities.
- Beaches and coves: as you can imagine, the coast of Sant Elm has beautiful beaches perfect to enjoy endless sunsets, such as Sa Petita, Cala en Basset, o Sa Gran.
- Cala en Basset Tower: built during the 16th century as part of a complex of defence towers installed to protect Mallorca from pirate attacks, the Cala en Basset Tower offers stunning views of the coast and the nearby island of Dragonera.
- Sant Elm Tower: perched atop a hill, this defence and watchtower has served many purposes throughout history, including a chapel and a hospital.
- Natural spaces: Sant Elm is nestled in a prized natural setting that has luckily been well preserved, making it the perfect place to unwind in one of the greenest areas on the island.
If you visit Sant Elm at the beginning of August, you can enjoy one of the town's most anticipated celebrations: the traditional battle between Moors and Christians held on the beach.
