Es Baluard Modern and Contemporary Art Museum

Es Baluard Modern and Contemporary Art Museum

The Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of Mallorca, better known as Es Baluard, combines history and modernity thanks to its peculiar facilities that extend over the old defensive wall of the city.

With a surface area of more than 5,000 square metres (53,819 square feet), the peculiar building of the Es Baluard Museu d’Art Modern i Contemporani in Mallorca was designed in 2003 to blend in with the old city walls, occupying a site that had been abandoned for more than 50 years.

Exploring the Museum

The building is a true architectural spectacle and, for most visitors, is even more important than its content. The most interesting part of the visit takes place on the terraces of Es Baluard, where, step by step on the ancient walls, you can immerse yourself in the vibrant history of Mallorca while enjoying excellent views of the city.

The main floor of the Es Baluard Museum houses the part dedicated to the museum's permanent collection, offering an excellent mix of paintings and sculptures among which you can see pieces by important artists such as Joan Miró, Magritte, Picasso or Barceló.

The basement of the Es Baluard Museum occupies the former 17th-century water cisterns and is used for temporary exhibitions on a variety of themes, making the lower level a constantly evolving space.

History & Modernity

Like other museums with specific themes, the Es Baluard Museum in Mallorca is an excellent recommendation for lovers of modern and contemporary art; however, thanks to its facilities that extend over the old city wall, it's an interesting option for all kinds of audiences.
